Tassel Tutorial
If there’s one thing you should know about me, it’s that I love tassels! I hang them everywhere and I love adding tassels to finished crochet items whenever I can. In this tutorial you’ll learn how to make a basic tassel with any type of yarn.
SUPPLIES
- Yarn
- Tassel Maker (Cardboard works well too)
- Tapestry Needle
- Scissors
The first thing you’re going to need is a base color for you yarn. The yarn pictured here is a worsted cotton. I’ve also added an accent yarn for the wrap around the tassel.
There are a lot of fancy tassel makers out there, but you don’t need any special tools. The only thing you’ll need is something to wrap your yarn around that is the length of the tassel you want. This tassel pictured was wrapped on the 4.25” section of this tassel maker.
Wrap your yarn around around as many times as you’d like. The more you wrap, the wider and fatter your tassel will be.
I am wrapping 15x for each tassel that I’m making. It is important to keep track of how many times you’ve wrapped to recreate multiple tassels with the same look.
To create your wrap, we are going to use a wrap knot.
Hold yarn under thumb and create a loop as pictured. Wrap yarn around the back of your tassel, keeping the loop in place.
Wrap the working end of yarn around the tassel as many times as you like. Again, keep track of how many wraps you complete. For this tutorial I wrapped 10x. Hold wrap tightly as you continue wrapping around the tassel.
Thread the working end of yarn into the loop that was created. Pull the bottom strand to tighten loop inside of wrap. This will hide the knot within the wrap making it invisible

Straighten out the strands of your tassel in preparation for trimming. Trim your tassel fringe. Now your tassel is ready to attach as fringe or use on its own.
